I’ve been having a look at ClickBank as a way to make money. I’ve seen it about for ages but have never signed up previously or studied it at any depth.

I can’t form any definite impression of the program as yet, as I only joined a couple of days ago, but many people claim to be making worthwhile money. I’ll experiment with it over the coming few weeks and I’ll let you know how I get on.

At the moment I’m looking at it from an affiliate angle - it’s also possible to sell your own products through ClickBank.

There are thousands of products to choose from which are all listed in their MarketPlace these fall into nine broad categories:

Business to Business, Health & Fitness, Home & Family, Computing and Internet, Money & Employment, Marketing & Ads, Fun & Entertainment, Sports & Recreation, Society & Culture.

These in turn are divided into subcategories to make it easier to find the right products for a particular niche to match your blog or website.

You simply choose the products you want to promote and get what they call a hoplink. This is simply a link with your chosen name included.

Nothing needs approval so you can be up and running with ClickBank in a short period of time.

Promotional material, however, is often in short supply so you may need to create your own. Otherwise it’s necessary to go to the websites, of the chosen products, to see if they have an affiliate link. If they have, there may be banners, ads etc. to use. I found though that some don’t offer this so all you end up with is a link.

As for the products they are a mixed lot and seem to mostly be ezines, courses, information and so on. A few examples:

Blogging To The Bank: Create highly profitable blogs that suck in thousands of target visitors every day.

Commissions vary but can be 60% or even more of the purchase price.

Note that commission is earned from product sales, you are not paid purely for clicks.

Payments are made to affiliates every two weeks. The payout threshold can be as low as $10 - but you have to go into your account and amend the default figure which is set at $100.

My first impressions …

The Good:
Thousands of products, something like 10,000!
Possible to get paid every two weeks.
High commission rates on some products -40%, 50%, 60%+
Instant sign up, no approval needed.
You can start promoting products immediately.
Can be promoted wordwide.
No products to handle personally.
Can be done anonymously.

The Not So Good:
Not always good promotional material available.
Have to make sales to make money.
Some of the products look a bit dodgy, so take care with your choice.
Need traffic to get sales.

I haven’t done any real promoting as yet with ClickBank. All I’ve done so far is place a few ads on a couple of my current blogs.

I’ve got a couple of ideas to try, such as starting a new blog on a defined niche and filling it with associated ClickBank offers. I’ll give it some proper thought and see what I come up with.

I think it’s worth a little experrymentation.

I don’t fill in many surveys, unless they are something that particularly interests me. So how have I made $170? By introducing people to YouGov who are interested in completing surveys.

This is what you can make by referring others - in YouGov’s own words:

“For each new member that signs up, via your personalised registration link, you will receive equivalent amounts in survey credit for each survey they complete during their first three months of membership.”

In other words if someone you introduce makes £10, in their first three months, then you will also get £10. And if they earn £50 in that period you will get £50 and so on.

Refer a few people and you have an income, even if only small, for doing very little - other than maybe placing a few text ads at the end of a post, which is all I do occasionally.

Note that you won’t get loads of span by joining YouGov. To quote the company, “Your contact details will only be used by YouGov to contact you for YouGov research.”

So that’s the world of YouGov. In the UK their survey results are often used in national newspapers and on television. There was actually one on the ITN news today about the current worldwide money/banking problems and what people thought about this.

Genuine surveys can be of value.

3 Mistakes This Newbie Made in Affiliate Marketing

Money Making Test Update On ClickBank
As regular readers will know I have been doing a test on ClickBank to see if the claims made about making money with the program are a reality for the average blogger.

I must admit that I haven’t got on as well as I had hoped.

One snag I have found:
I have made a total of $64.72 and, as I had requested checks to be sent once over $50, I thought I would receive payment. But this wasn’t to be the case.

My payment was marked as CDR (Customer Distribution Requirement). On checking what this means this is what I found:

Payments are held unless the following criteria are met:

(1) Sales are made with 5 or more different credit card numbers and
(2) Sales are made with two different payment methods (either Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal). Note: PayPal purchases do not count toward the minimum 5 different credit card numbers.

So if your sales are all with say Visa then you have to wait for your money. They say that this is to stop affiliates using ClickBank to collect rebates (on their own orders) or extending credit to others. I gather that this is only when you start out - at least I hope it is.

Think of that as you will. In fairness it is on their website but, to come across this, I think you would have to one of those very thorough people who wade through a lot of Q&A’s.

Orders Per Click
I’ve found the orders per click so far to be poor. I’ve had over 2,300 clicks but have only made $64.72.

I don’t know how many clicks I’ve actually had in total because, as far as I can see, ClickBank only give stats for 30 days.

I feel I’ve done okay with generating clicks. I’ve averaged about 76 per day, but this hasn’t produced sufficient sales as far as I’m concerned. (I do some programs where I can average 1 in 25 sales, though not of such high amounts dollar wise).

I’ll press on for a few more weeks as the blog, Good Health Source, I started to tie in with ClickBank is beginning to build up steam.

I’ll get back to you with how I eventually get on with ClickBank.

What I did previously find though was that:

(1) Some of the widgets slowed down the loading of my blogs.

(2) The return on CPM (cost per thousand impressions) for international impressions i.e. non USA is very low. However, in saying this, some widgets are based on a pay per click basis and this, depending on the products, is much better.

I actually took all of the widgets off my blogs a while back but I’m trying them out again now. I have found that the ones I am using at the moment (see header ad on Celebrity Insider) are loading much quicker now.

There is also a bigger choice of widgets. As well as Shopping ones there are also now ‘Local’ and ‘Travel’ widgets. These come in a variety of sizes.

I’m actually trying out the Local version which, to quote them, gives, ‘relevant, real-time local content, such as weather, gas prices, top local businesses and restaurants.’

I’ll leave it at that but, if you are thinking about joining WidgetBucks, it’s probably a good time to join to get the $25.

Also, as I’m being honest, there is a referral program for introducing new members. It’s not over generous but these are the terms:

“… you will receive a 5 percent referral fee based on the commissions earned by the people you refer. You’ll receive this 5 percent for the full 12 months after the new member joins.”

In other words if you joined and earned $100 I as the referrer would get $5.
